San Francisco offers so many places to enjoy so many kinds of energy and talent and I?m listing the places I find tried and true and a way to connect with them. A great and unique place for me to start is the beautiful Plush Room in The York Hotel. Trevor Logan is the brilliant mind behind the national acclaim and success of this famed nightclub with the charm of the greatest supper clubs ever known. Cabaret and Jazz are the most frequent forms of musical entertainment found here, but they also book and support the new and promising acts we all seek. Rita Moreno, Sam Harris, Jacquie Naylor and Tim Hockenberry are among the steady stream of major talent to play this major national venue. Cabaret fans are invited to check out and subscribe to a great online resource created by Bruce Phillips and operated by Shaynee Rainbolt called eCabaret-SF.com which offers very complete weekly email updates on everything happening in the world of cabaret.

The Fillmore is the legacy of the great impresario Bill Graham and presented many of the most famous acts of the last half of the 20th century from Jimmie Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Santana, The Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead and The Rolling Stones to name a few. The Great American Music Hall is another stand-alone venue for major touring talent with emphasis on blues, rock and Funk in a beautiful large and adaptable Victorian Music Hall. This great venue was created by legendary restaurateur Sam DuVall and is located next door to another great American institution, The Mitchell Brothers Cinema where Behind the Green Door was filmed and history made. The Great American Music Hall features artists like The Electric Prunes, Glasstown, Roy Rogers and Norton Buffalo and lots of accessible contemporary talent.

Bimbo?s, Harry Denton?s Rouge, The Boom Boom Room and The Starlite Room offer swank surroundings and hot local talent, and Piano Bar and pop standards are best found at Martuni?s, Paisley?s, and The Lush Lounge.

Favorite clubs are The Stud, home to the outstanding Heklina and Trannyshack along with the hot Planet Big Dances; The Makeout Room, Elbo Room, Bottom of the Hill and where I can hear the intelligent and challenging music of Michael Mullen and Adam Klein of Roman Evening and Glasstown or The Slow Poisoners.

And I don?t want to forget gems like the Top of the Mark, Tosca Caf?, Vessuvio?s, Spec?s, The Tonga Room, or the fabulous Moose?s where the entertainment isn?t necessarily live music, but the staying power and the people sitting and sipping next to you are equally entertaining themselves.
